Why Celebrate Dhanteras :
Two days before the festival of Dhanteras comes on the Trayodashi of Kartik Moss. On this day people bring something new to their house. It is believed that it is considered auspicious to bring anything new in the house on this day. Money is considered the best of all things.
It is said in the Puranas that on this day Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the nectar urn. There is also a legend about it that when all the gods were afraid of King Bali, then Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana and reached the place of sacrifice of King Bali. Lord Vaman asked King Bali to donate three steps of land.
King Bali was a very charitable king. No one left his court empty handed. He took a vow with an urn in his hand. Then Lord Vamana measured the whole earth in one step and space in the other step. Now there was no space left to keep the third step, so King Bali put his head forward.
Shukracharya understood the move of Lord Vamana and Shukracharya had stopped King Bali but the king did not agree. Then Shukracharya hid himself in a small form in the kamandal during the resolution, due to which the water did not come out during the resolution. But Lord Vishnu understood that this was Shukracharya’s trick and he grabbed the Kalash in such a way that Shukracharya’s eye was broken and he came out trembling with pain.
In this way the gods were liberated from King Bali and the wealth which was looted from the gods was returned to them many times more. For this reason, also the festival of Dhanteras is celebrated.
Dhanteras katha In Hindi :
One day Lord Vishnu came to the earth to roam in the world of death. After sometime he said to Lakshmi that I am going towards south direction, don’t look there, as soon as God found the way, Lakshmi followed behind. A mustard field was visible just a short distance away.
After that the field of sugarcane appeared. The same Laxmiji did her makeup and broke the udder and started sucking. Immediately the Lord returned and upon seeing this he got angry and cursed Lakshmi ji – that the farmer who has this field should serve him for 13 years.
Saying this, Lord went to Kshirsagar and Lakshmi went to the farmer’s place and filled him with food grains. After that, after 12 years, Lakshmiji agreed to go, but the farmer stopped. When God came to the farmer’s place to call Lakshmi, the farmer did not let Lakshmi go.
Then God said that you along with your family go and take bath in the Ganges and leave these cowards in the water too. I will not leave until you return. The farmer did the same.
As soon as he put a penny in the Ganges, in the same way four quadrilaterals came out in the Ganges and started carrying the shells. Then the farmer, seeing such a surprise, asked the farmer whose four arms were. Gangaji told that, O farmer, those four hands belonged to me, the shells you have presented are given to whom.
The farmer said – two gentlemen have come to my house, they have given it. Ganga ji said – The woman who is in your house is Lakshmi and the man is Lord Vishnu. You do not let Lakshmi go, otherwise you will again become poor in the same way. Hearing this, when he returned home, he said to God that – I will not let Laxmiji go.
Then God explained to the farmer that he was cursed by me who had been serving you for twelve years. Then Lakshmi is fickle, big people could not stop her. The farmer stubbornly said again – no, now I will not let Lakshmi ji go.On this Laxmiji herself said that O farmer. If you want to stop me, listen. Tomorrow is teres, you keep your house clean. Light a lamp of ghee in the night when I come to your house. At that time you worship me, but I will not see you.
